Sutton Place

Our clients brought us this apartment with one mandate—to highlight the panoramic views across the East River.  By opening up corners and combining rooms, we sculpted a series of spaces—entry, foyer, living/dining/kitchen–that spill like a tiered fountain into the glimmering water beyond.

With the help of interior designer Mike Rataczak, the apartment was fitted with understated cabinetry, upholstered in pale nubby fabrics, and lit with a blend of sparkling fixtures, shaded lamps, and concealed coves.  Everything was chosen to invite the silvery-blue flicker of the river into the apartment.  In the morning, the rising sun bounces in off the water; in the evening the illuminated Tri-borough Bridge serves as nightlight.

Our clients’ favorite corner of the apartment is the generous window seat in the living room bay. They wake up there with morning coffee looking south to the harbor, and they wind down there with an evening cocktail, enjoying the glow of ferries and skyline.
